  • The Photoshop team would like to provide advanced notice that Photoshop CS6 (13.0) will be the last major version of Photoshop to support Windows XP. (Photoshop CS6 does not support Windows Vista.) In addition, all subsequent Photoshop feature updates specifically for Creative Cloud members will no longer support Windows XP.

  • I appreciate Linux, MacOS and the like, but I ❤️ me some Microsoft Windows. Why? Let's not get into it right now. Let's just say I can be helpful if you use Windows too.

Advanced System Care FREE, by IObit

It all started many years ago, with a tool made by IObit for cleaning up your Windows system. I used it personally and often professionally, although not necessarily approved software in a digital forensic environment. Wrong, it is easy to get off-the-shelf or subscription-based software tested, documented, and/or approved. I digress.

IObit uses a LOT of ads in their FREE products. They have clear check boxes though in their installers where you can easily disable any of the additional stuff being bundled, and the other ads that may pop up too often are well worth the value the product provides, IMHO. In fact, it's how I came across iTop Easy Desktop.

  • A touch screen, touch mouse, touch pad, but no touch keyboard? Seriously? Hey Microsoft (& others), I think you missed the forrest because of all of the trees.

It's simple really: why move my hands from the keyboard to further interact when I shouldn't have to? Let's place a small touch area in the keyboard right beneath the space bar, where it can be accessed by the user's thumbs as they type.

Any actual products born from this idea shall donate 50% of their profits to a reputable charity. You're welcome.

  • MSI A16 AI Copilot 2-in-1 Business Laptop

"Why would you put this under the Forensics category?", you may ask. I could give two...Hey, did you see the Presidential Address? Wow. So Presidential. I digress, again.

Ordered two new rigs today to replace some long-in-the-tooth equipment, improve integration & efficiency, streamline communication, improve mobility, and do it all for peanuts, quite literally, when compared to the competition.

  • As free and open-source software continues to become more powerful and more prevalent, there's less and less need to choose anything else.

  • When Windows 8 launches later this year you'll be able to upgrade to the pro version of Microsoft's newest desktop OS for just $40 for a limited time. The deal will apply to a broad base of current Windows users including those running Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft had a similar offer during the launch of Windows 7 but this one is cheaper than its predecessor. (Windows 7 upgrades ranged from $50-$100 at launch.)

  • Windows 8 will introduce a slew of interesting features, but will they benefit you?

Upgrades, system migration, support headaches -- IT folks are probably dreading the next major Windows rollout. Yet Windows 8, which is scheduled to move to the beta stage in late February and will likely launch in the fall, does offer several compelling new features for both IT and end users.

  • So, I ditched Windows 8 Consumer Preview for Windows 8 Release Preview Friday night, and so far, so good.  I've even noticed that I've actually started using some the Metro style apps included by default, which I hadn't used at all in the Consumer Preview really.

  • The FREE Windows File Recovery app is in the news again this week, with The Verge, ZDNet and others reporting on this "new" utility/tool.

Although it's not "new", as it was released in January, you likely haven't had a version of their OS that can run it until recently, unless you're an insider or developer. It is command line tool, but pretty simple to use (think PhotoRec/TestDisk). It can be used to recover from internal drives, HDD or SSD drives, cameras, USB and flash card storage. You'll need Win 10 version 19041.0 or higher.

  • Microsoft warned on Tuesday of a Windows vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer if the user is logged on with administrative rights.

To be successful, an attacker would have to send an email with an attached Microsoft Word or PowerPoint file containing a specially crafted thumbnail image and convince the recipient to open it, Microsoft said in its advisory, which also contains information on workarounds.
