Wow. Very, very cool device. Apple’s innovation continues to blow away their competition by leaps and bounds, and you can bet that the iPhone will be one of, if not the, hottest tech gadget(s) of 2007. A must have though? Well, no, not from a business productivity standpoint. But with the introduction of Mac OS X in the mobile device marketplace I’m quite certain Windows, Palm, and RIM are not feeling all warm and fuzzy.

This device’s cool factor is absolutely off the charts, which will certainly drive sales through the roof for the foreseable future. A multi-touch display providing complete navigation AND functionality simply through touch, a proximity sensor that recognizes when you lift the phone to your ear, an auto-rotating screen, full-featured HTML browser, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2MP camera, widescreen iPod for your music/videos, rich HTML POP3/IMAP email client…yada, yada, yada. The Unexplained

Unfortunately, in my opinion, Apple choose Cingular as their exclusive partner for this device. A big win for Cingular, but disappointing for broadband junkies like myself. Cingular’s EDGE network speeds pale in comparison to EvDO. A 2 megapixel camera? Sure that’s better than most phones on the market today, but it just doesn’t seem right to me given how forward thinking they were with the rest of the device’s functionality. Additionally, although they partnered with Google for search and Maps, the iPhone does not incorporate GPS; what’s up with that?

The iPhone will unquestionably be an enormous success, quite simply because of it’s cool factor. I won’t be buying one anytime soon, but on the other hand I can’t wait to see what’s in the future for OS X in the mobile device marketplace.
